Our Staff

USG Illinois is led by coaches and baseball professionals who prioritize player growth and leadership on and off the field. The staff focuses on fundamentals, advanced skill work, and mindset development to help athletes reach their potential. Coaches work closely with players and families to create a consistent, team-first culture.

David Cales

David was a Division 1 infielder and pitcher for the University of Missouri and the University of Illinois Chicago. He earned recognition as the 2007 Horizon League Relief Pitcher of the Year, was selected for the 2007 All-New Corner Team, and was named MVP of the 2007 U.S. Army Horizon League Baseball Championship. David was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 2008 and played professional baseball for seven years at the AA and AAA levels for the Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox. He has over ten years experience as a coach and trainer with the Central Illinois Travel Baseball Organization, offering specialized training in hitting, infield, and pitching.

Riley Sundstrom

Riley is a Peoria Notre Dame alum and former two-year starting pitcher with All-Conference honors. His college years included serving as Student Manager and Director of Baseball Operations at Bradley University. He then became an Assistant Coach at Keystone College (Division III) with a focus on player development, baseball operations, and analytics. He worked closely with pitching staff to enhance pitch design and mechanics, and trained position players in all aspects of the field. Riley also was an Assistant Coach/Director of Baseball Analytics with the Brewster Whitecaps in the Cape Cod Baseball League. He has coached with the Central Illinois Travel Baseball Organization since 2018 with a focus on advanced player development and team performance.

Kristian Marion (aka Jafar)

Carsten Thurman (aka CC)

Carsten is a seasoned player who competed in top tournaments nationwide against elite opponents. He learned from and trained with renowned coaches such as David Cales, Craig “Sarge” Dixon (Jeager), Justin Stone (Cubs Coach), Travis Kerber (Cubs Coach), and Andy Haines (MLB Hitting Coach for the Cubs, Brewers, and Pirates). Growing up in Morton, Carsten played for Elite Baseball Training in Chicago for seven years and spent his 17u season with the Central Illinois Outlaws. As one of David Cale’s first clients in the Peoria area, Carsten excelled as a youth athlete and began coaching as an Assistant Coach for the Central Illinois Travel Baseball Organization in 2023. He discovered a passion for coaching and now shares his extensive knowledge of hitting, pitching, and game fundamentals with young players in the region.
